For weeks, there has been a change brewing at DC Comics. In late January, DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns and Co-Publishers Jim Lee and Dan Didio released a simple image of a blue curtain with the word “Rebirth” emblazoned across it, sparking a flurry of speculation across the internet as to whether the company would be undertaking its second reboot in less than a decade.
While Johns was quick to downplay the reboot talk, posting a captioned version of the same blue curtain to his personal Instagram account.
Despite the reboot denials, it does appear that Rebirth will mark a significant change in creative direction for the company. In all likelihood, Rebirth will be a “relaunch” along the lines of Marvel’s “All-New, All Different” run of books, which featured an unchanged continuity with new creative teams. It has been confirmed in past weeks that Scott Snyder will be departing the flagship Batman title for Detective Comics and that Marguerite Bennett would be taking over writing Wonder Woman, but the overall nature of the event itself is still shrouded in mystery.
Today Bleeding Cool’s Rich Johnston reported that he has heard from several creators that DC is looking to lock them into exclusive contracts, which would prohibit them from doing work-for-hire for other publishers. In most cases, such contracts do not preclude creators from doing creator-owned work with publishers such as Image.
While no firm list of creators being offered such contracts has been revealed by DC, expect announcements to begin flowing as creators make their final decisions on whether or not to hitch their proverbial boats exclusively to DC Comics.
